The Regulus Caves, a wonderful heritage
An exceptional site in Charente-Maritime, the Regulus caves overlook the Gironde estuary. Their name comes from the ship scuttled in 1814 by the French troops, a ship that was voluntarily scuttled in order not to be given to the English. These Meschers holes, or cavities, are naturally dug in the limestone cliffs. During the 19th century, they were enlarged to become a troglodytic habitat, passages were also brought there.
The organized visits of the cliffs will allow you to better understand this exceptional heritage. While enjoying the splendid landscape, you will discover the secrets of these suspended troglodytic caves, now turned into museums.
Today, these municipal caves offer to the visitors who discover them an aesthetic but also historical interest. When you go there, you will be surprised and amazed by the beauty of the place. The cliffs and caves, luminous and overhanging, offer us a breathtaking setting. They represent a visit not to be missed during your vacations in Charente-Maritime.
