A bit of history about the Abbaye aux Dames
Founded by the Count of Anjou in the 11th century and showing many traces of its original architecture, the Abbaye aux Dames was a Benedictine convent for the women of noble families. Eleanor of Aquitaine made a donation to the abbey, while Agnès of Burgundy retired there after the death of the Count of Anjou.
The abbey church is the oldest part, with Romanesque architecture from the 11th and 12th centuries, with an emblematic bell tower in the shape of a « pine cone ».
Observe the sculptures of the tympanum above the west portal, with animals sculpted in a very particular way that is repeated throughout the Saintogne region in the churches of Colombiers, Aulnay and Marignac.
